Baseline and Omega Spark have been a great success over the past year. MS patients and many others were attracted to the simplicity of the regime.

Taking Baseline Plus, Omega Spark and omega 3 supplements covers the vast majority of our nutritional needs.

As the first batch of Baseline were running out, it was decided from received feedback to reformulate. The most important change was the name.

Omega spark was designed to work with omega 3 to maximise its conversion to the active fatty acid EPA. It contained several antioxidants, which protected the omega 3 from oxidisation.  Omega spark was designed to be taken at a different time from Baseline Plus, as it contains copper, which should ideally be taken separately from the zinc in Baseline plus. The two minerals are essential for efficient production of the enzyme which helps to detoxify the body. Unfortunately they compete for absorption in the bowel and should be taken at least two hours apart. 

The new names are Baseline AM and Baseline PM.

Other changes are:

• Vitamin E in Baseline pm has been improved and is now exclusively from natural sources.
• Selenium has been increased  from 35 mcg to 50 mcg.
• Manganese, an essential mineral, is in both capsules.
• Calcium is increased  by 100mg by its addition to Baseline pm.
• The addition of coenzyme Q10 in place of ginkgo biloba.

Q10 is a fat-soluble antioxidant and a vital nutrient for energy production.  Both of these functions are important to MS patients, 80% of whom suffer from fatigue. Fat-soluble antioxidants should help to protect the myelin sheath and nervous system from free radical damage by the immune system. It is an important part of the anti oxidant network set up by Baseline AM / PM, which includes vitamins C and E, zinc, copper, manganese and selenium.

Ginkgo is an excellent supplement, but is subject to restrictions in some countries, being prescription only in Ireland which meant that MS patients there could not previously buy Baseline. It is also unsuitable for epileptic patients and not recommended in pregnancy, so the negatives of including it outweighed the positives.

Many patients using Baseline said their skin and nails had improved. This is a good sign, indicating improved production of collagen, which is promoted by zinc and vitamin C.

Dr Tom Gilhooly feels the new formulation is a big improvement and he is going to promote Baseline AM/PM here in the UK and abroad for both MS patients and the general public.

Do I have to take anything else?

Omega 3 supplements are strongly recommended in MS, as maintaining a correct omega balance will greatly reduce inflammation levels.

Is Baseline AM & PM only for MS?

No , Baseline was designed for MS patients but it actually has a more general application. Dr Tom Gilhooly wanted to produce a general supplement but when he thought of what he would include, it was all already in Baseline. Therefore Baseline is ideal for everyone.
